few and far, far

time has accelerated so that my last entry seems a short time ago but it isn't. this reminds me of living in wakayama prefecture in japan, where some believe that the area exists in 3.5 dimensions, causing time to act differently. maybe i'd adjusted to that, and now i'm in hyperdrive. speaking of time shifts, 2046.

it was a themed evening: cantonese. my two companions, he-man and hong, and i went to dinner in chinatown where they ordered in their native language. i learned to tap the table next to my cup to mean, "thank you" when tea was poured for me. we were aglow with a unanimous endearment for wong kar wai.

the film was huge on the screen before me, but the execution of the story felt incrementally smaller and smaller. i see now a pattern among his main characters where the guy loves the one woman he cannot for whatever reason end up with. i can't help but think about how all stories are a reflection of the artist. i'm not so concerned with that, but only how it plays out again and again, like the message of a dream.

i maintain that my favorite is chungking express, and then, fallen angels. i'm still inspired.

2046 Birthday

I'll admit it--I forgot about the film after having searched my fingers off for where it would play in SF. A few weeks ago at a party put on by our ESL school's students, I and someone from Hong Kong, not a student but someone who visits them sometimes, attempted to talk to each other for about half and hour. He speaks almost no English, and I never learned Cantonese. The only thing we communicated successfully was that we both love Wong Kar Wai, and Chungking Express in particular. Our mutual understanding of this was expressed with enthusiasm and much laughter.

My birthday always seems to start a few days early and continue and few days after. Having forgotten about 2046 (given up on seeing on a large screen), I was surprised yesterday when I was approached by this same person, who in order to avoid mispronunciation has, like many people with Chinese names, chosen a name in English. In this case, the name is He-Man, God knows why. I need to learn his Chinese name cause it sure won't fly, me calling him that. Anyway, he came up to me yesterday and said, "2046!" and then kept saying something that could have been, "Richmond," or "Natiol" or something. Finally he procured a brochure from the Metreon, where the movie is not actually playing but he thought it was, and he invited me to see it. At least we know it comes out Friday. In our native languages, we will both get an understanding of the film.

Happy.

junk comments

more things exist than i will ever know...mundane oddities being one of them.

other thoughts:
a river changes its course and it looks like its whole life has changed, which it has. But its destination remains the same.

The Writer

Wooden boats, musical instruments and fireworks are some of the best inventions. And cameras. I don't believe in following any one person or set of ideas. There are tiny satiations like orchids along the viny forest floor, blooming unseen, more gorgeous than some could keep from weeping over. Whenever I see the occasional sun rise the colors always surprise me like the flavor of tahini in Holland. Subway cars make great rhythm along the tracks, as does wind in treebranches, the sound pattern of running engines, and sometimes clothes in a dryer. I like Sumerian poetry.
